Sen. Larry Craig's Family Needs Our Prayers

Posted on: August 29, 2007

By Brandi Swindell

In light of the troubling situation surrounding US Senator Larry Craig we must extend our prayers to the Senator’s family, friends and staff. During a time like this it is very difficult for the family to endure the stress and heartbreak. It is my hope and prayer that the Senator and his family find healing and seek spiritual guidance during this traumatic time.

Because of the nature of the crime Sen. Craig was convicted of and his position of authority, we must also address some key points.

Elected officials have an obligation to be open and honest with those who have elected them. Sen. Craig has unfortunately violated the trust he held with Idahoans. There is no doubt that our US Senator served Idaho well for many years. In many ways he was a wonderful advocate for the people of Idaho. It is very sad that all of his hard work and accomplishments will now be tainted. As the Senator openly admitted he has put a “dark cloud over Idaho”.

I have been asked what I think Sen. Craig should do. My response is very simple. Sen. Craig should do what he was elected to do. That is, he should do what is best for Idaho. Just as he admitted that he would be a distraction for Mitt Romney and resigned from the campaign, the same may be true for his work representing Idahoans.

Ultimately it should be the people of Idaho that determine whether or not he finishes his term. Sen. Craig will need to respect and honor those he was elected to serve.
