Eric Watte has never been one to pass up a good deal.

While on his honeymoon, Watte dug carpeting out of a trash bin for his first house. For his business, Twin Falls-based New Leaf Properties, he buys houses in any condition, fixes them up and sells them to investors. He manages a hotel and furnishes it with used, mismatched furniture that has been cleaned and restored.

And he’ll be darned if he pays full price when he can get a lower one.

“You don’t always get it,” Watte said. “But if you want it, you can ask.”

Forget urbanites’ brand devotion. This is the rural version of consumer bragging rights.

Haggling is something of an art form at flea markets, antique stores and family-owned businesses in southern Idaho. Budget-minded customers like Watte bargain for bottom prices, benefiting both buyers and sellers.
