Dr. Michael Francisco, representing the Southeast Idaho Medical Association, presented a $500.00 gift to the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District’s 2007-2008 Teacher of the Year, Tedra Balls. The Southeast Idaho Medical Association promotes education at all levels and has been a friend and a partner in education with the District for many years.
The Pocatello/Chubbuck School District has expanded its emergency school closure plan to include delayed start times. Implementation of delayed or “late starts” would allow the District to postpone start times of school by up to two hours, when necessary. The purpose of the expanded plan is to insure the safety of our students and staff, and to protect precious instructional time.

State Superintendent, Tom Luna, will visit Gate City Elementary school on Friday, November 9 at 1:45 p.m. Pocatello/Chubbuck School District Superintendent, Mary Vagner, will accompany Mr. Luna on his visit to the school. A class series: Simple financial changes that make a difference…
For the second consecutive year, three Pocatello-area Lithia dealerships have raised significant funds to help offset the local teachers’ burden of spending their own dollars on materials for their classrooms. In the United States, the average teacher spends $659 per year to purchase classroom supplies for students. This year, with the Lithia Back to School Challenge raising over $16,000, the local teachers will be allowed to submit for grants to put towards their materials and equipment for the 2007-2008 school year.
Curriculum concerns ranged from the material not being challenging enough to actually loosing more children to dropout due to the increased requirements.
One year after the death of fellow student Cassie Jo Stoddard, students at Pocatello High School will launch the “Virtues Project” with a proclamation by Mayor Roger Chase, a carnival, and a virtues/pride t-shirt for all students and staff.

Last night, at the Pocatello/Chubbuck School Board meeting, the board voted unanimously to ratify the Negotiated Agreement between the District and the Pocatello Education Association.
The Pocatello/Chubbuck School District, in cooperation with parents and nonpublic school agencies, engages in Child Find services throughout the school year. Child Find activities are conducted to (1) create public awareness of special education programs, (2) advise the public that students who qualify for services have the right to a free, appropriate public education and confidentiality protections, and (3) alert community residents that a process exists for identifying and serving children with disabilities from the age of 3 through the semester in which they turn 21.

After five years of participating in an innovative energy conservation program, the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District has saved more than $2 million.
The Pocatello Police Department and the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District will hold a combined safety training exercise at Century High School. The training will be held the week of August 6, 2007 at 7801 Diamondback Drive. Training will involve members of the Pocatello Police Department and District administrators.
The Gang Training 101 Session, sponsored by District 6 Juvenile Justice and hosted by the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District is not open for public participation. The training is for law enforcement, judicial, and education personnel only.

The Pocatello/Chubbuck School District is pleased to partner with the Juvenile Justice Council in hosting a Gang 101 Seminar. The seminar is designed to target awareness, procedures, and strategies that can be used in our community and schools to combat gang activity.
In an effort to facilitate student placement and enhance the learning environment for elementary students in the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District, Patti Mortensen, Director of Elementary Education, is asking that parents follow one of three options for registering ALL elementary students for the 2007-08 school year.
The Pocatello/Chubbuck School District announced the Idaho Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) results at a news conference at the District offices on July 17, 2007. The No Child Left Behind Act requires that an Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) report be made on the state of academic achievement within the School District.

The Early Childhood Coordinating Council provides leadership for implementation of the Idaho Infant Toddler Program. This program offers early intervention services for children from birth to three with developmental disabilities, and their families. The ECCC also provides leadership in coordinating and planning for all children from birth through eight, and their families.
“It’s easy for most of the world to know what they will be doing in ten to twenty years; it is what America is doing right now,” said Simpson. “Our future is unknown and in order to maintain our innovative edge, we must give teachers and students the resources they need to excel in math and science.”
The registration date for the Summer Driver Education Session is Wednesday, May 9, 2007 between 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. at the Highland High School Commons Area, 1800 Bench Road. The Summer Session will run from June 4, 2007 through July 13, 2007. Students must be 14 ½ years of age by Wednesday, May 9, 2007 before going to the License Bureau for their permit.
The Pocatello/Chubbuck School District Special Services Department will host their 1st Annual Transition Fair – Building A Bridge to Tomorrow on April 25, 2007 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The Government Finance Officers Association has awarded Bart J. Reed, Business Operations Director for the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District and a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by an organization and its management.
Pocatello/Chubbuck School District’s Jefferson Elementary School was the biggest winner in a local lottery competition. Idaho Lottery’s annual Jim Bruce Scratch for School competition was held earlier this month. The competition, which is held in several locations throughout Idaho, gives schools the chance to earn money by scratching as many lottery tickets as possible in five minutes.

Century High School’s head varsity football coach will be Mr. Nate Borchert. Mr. Borchert was recommended from an excellent list of candidates by the Century High School coaches’ advisory committee, which consisted of administrators, staff, students and citizens. “All of his references and recommendations are of an outstanding nature said John Raukar, District Athletic Director. It is my feeling, and that of the advisory committee, that Mr. Borchert brings to this position many skills including organization, football knowledge, and the ability to effectively work with the coaching staff and student athletes.”
Each high school has a variety of excellent class offerings for students. It is an important time in the lives of incoming freshmen. All eighth-grade students and their parents are encouraged to attend the event.
Eighth grade students who will be attending the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District high schools next fall (2007-2008) and parents, are invited to a Freshman Orientation. The event will be held Wednesday, April 4, 2007 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at each high school. Freshman orientation includes an electives fair where students and their parents can see the classes that are available to help them choose what classes to take their freshman year. It also includes a tour of the school and a chance to meet and talk to teachers.

The United States Senate adopted a measure to reauthorize the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000 today on a vote of 75-22. The reauthorization was adopted as an amendment to the FY2007 Emergency Supplemental Appropriations bill.
In order to help timber-dependent communities offset the impact of federal lands on their tax base, the law established a safety net for the historic 25 Percent Fund payments that date back 100 years. Enacted in 2000, the Act also established Resource Advisory Committees, made up of a collaborative, local group to direct some of the funds to projects on the local forest and provided additional funding to “Title III” projects, including search and rescue reimbursement and implementation of the Firewise Community Protection Program.

Highland High School sophomore biology class is mentoring Tendoy fifth graders through the Science Buddies Project. The project enhances science literacy and is supported by a National Science Foundation grant administered by Idaho State University. The GK-12 Project brings undergraduate and graduate students together with teachers of grades 5 – 12 for 10 hours a week for an entire school year. Teachers and college students receive stipends
“We can talk about increasing flexibility under No Child Left Behind until we are blue in the face, but for most of these rural schools there are no other options,” Simpson said. “We need to take a hard look at these requirements and provide rural schools with the necessary tools to help their students succeed.”

Registration for children entering Kindergarten in the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 for the 2007-2008 school year will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2007. Registration will be at area schools. Children must register at the school they will attend. Spring registration helps the district make plans for placement of students and provides parents with information about the school and kindergarten program.
Pocatello High School is hosting a special community seminar designed specifically for parents. This is provided to help parents watch for behaviors in their children, that may signal signs of stress as a result of the tragic death of a student last September, and the resulting school trauma that occurred throughout the investigation of that death. This seminar provides practical strategies for identifying, understanding and responding to risky behaviors and the code of silence.

The Board of Trustee’s current policy adoption process includes a first reading only, with policy adopted or revised at the time of the reading. It does not allow for public input. Hence, the Board gave direction to administration to revise this policy to solicit public input and expand the number of readings prior to adoption. Therefore, we are in the process of implementing a new procedure to solicit any employee or public comments on any new or revised policies in between a first and second reading by the Board of Trustees.
Hawthorne Middle School students and staff welcomed Senator Mike Crapo, families of Idaho’s 1016th Quartermaster Company, the American Legion Post 4 Honor Guard, and members of the Idaho National Guard to their school.
State Superintendent of Schools, Tom Luna, is scheduled to visit the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District on Friday, February 23, 2007. Mr. Luna will visit Hawthorne Middle school from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.
Over 300 students at Hawthorne Middle School will be presented the Spirit of Idaho Award by Senator Mike Crapo. The senator will be at the school Friday, February 23, 2007 from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m. to present the award.
“It’s a valuable program,” Mitton said. “From the graduate student’s end, I think it forces them to change their vocabulary and learn to explain science simply. No matter what the field of science a graduate student studies they learn the technical language and jargon of it. The minute they start using that technical jargon in my classroom, the kids start to tune out, so the graduate student has to learn to better explain the subject, and it makes them better teachers.”

The Women and Work conference is provided for women who are either involved with or interested in nontraditional occupations.
The classes will take place on three Fridays – Feb. 23, March 9 and March 23 – from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in Museum Classroom 204. Cost for the three-class series is $25. Those who cannot attend all three classes can still participate for a prorated fee.
Student members of the ISU Professional Pharmacy Student Alliance (PPSA) will hold the 14th annual Spaghetti Feed and Auction at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, in the Pond Student Union Building Ballroom. More than 30 percent of their $20,000 goal will benefit a Pocatello youth through the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Idaho. The remainder will benefit PPSA professional development and community health-promotion projects.
The puzzle-solving champion will win a grand prize of $100. There also will be semi-finalist prizes and door prizes.
The excitement of this project has been a springboard into what the youth think of as a corollary to the Back Pack Program. The Give Back (the clothes you don’t wear) Program proposes to conduct clothing drives at several local grade schools. The clothes will then be cleaned, mended and sorted for distribution by Sue and her colleagues.

FIRST Lego League robotic competition, FLL 2006 Nano Quest, was hosted in Pocatello and included 20 teams from around the city. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science & Technology) Lego League is an international competition. Working in partnership with Idaho State University and the GK-12 grant, Pocatello/Chubbuck School District students gained hands-on math, science and technology skills. Twenty teams competed.
School District 25 reports that there are frozen water pipes at Highland High School and Irving Middle School. Syringa Elementary School is having problems with their boiler. All three schools are open and the problems are being corrected.
The Pocatello/Chubbuck School District’s Food Service announces a new payment option for parents. The Parent Account Management System, PAYPAMS, provides an additional way for parents to put money into their child’s food service account.
PAYPAMS is accessible through the Internet or by phone. It allows parents the ability to prepay for their child’s meals from home or from the office. It also allows parents to view their child’s meal account balance, schedule automatic payments based on the account balance, receive low balance e-mail reminders, view a report of daily spending and cafeteria purchases, and view the school cafeteria’s menu.
