Pocatello – Idaho State University alumnus Bill Kobus ’81 has been named permanent director of the ISU Office of Alumni Relations.
“Bill’s commitment to Idaho State University is remarkable,” said Vice President for University Advancement Dr. Kent Tingey. “He brings unique management experience and skills that are proving invaluable as our Alumni Association seeks to continue building Idaho State University and objectives important to its success.”
Kobus, a resident of Idaho Falls, was named interim director in January 2006. He is a retired U.S. Postal Service senior executive. Among other assignments, he served as postmaster at Pocatello, Boise, Albuquerque, N.M., and Salt Lake City.
As a non-traditional student, he earned undergraduate degrees from the University of Alaska Anchorage and Idaho State University, and a master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma. He and his wife, Rosemary, have four grown children and nine grandchildren.
Kobus served on the Alumni Board of Directors for six years including a term as president in 2001.
“I really want to do what I can to help President Arthur C. Vailas succeed,” Kobus said. “He has a terrific vision and a tremendous amount of optimism for this university.”
A primary goal is fundraising and, ultimately, construction of a proposed ISU Alumni and Visitor Center. He said Alumni Relations is working to identify a lead donor for the center.
“We don’t have anything like it on campus now,” Kobus said, “but like President Vailas said, this is a necessity.”
Initiatives that Kobus has furthered include a new ISU collegiate license plate to raise funds for scholarships, and the Alumni Association’s first memorial scholarship endowment.
He said he will work to promote greater outreach to and engagement with ISU alumni, and to increase fundraising for scholarships.
