SENATOR MIKE CRAPO PRESENTS “SPIRIT OF IDAHO” AWARD TO HAWTHORNE MIDDLE SCHOOL
Hawthorne Middle School students and staff welcomed Senator Mike Crapo, families of Idaho’s 1016th Quartermaster Company, the American Legion Post 4 Honor Guard, and members of the Idaho National Guard to their school. Unlike most school assemblies, the group of more than 550 was unusually quiet and very respectful, something that did not go unnoticed by the senator.
“I want to thank you for your respectfulness today, said Senator Crapo. It shows your respect for the troops who are fighting to maintain our freedoms, more freedoms than any other country in the world enjoys.” Senator Crapo visited the school to present students with the Spirit of Idaho Award. The senator created the award as a way to acknowledge worthwhile projects that may go unnoticed. The awards are given for service to a community. It can be given to individuals or groups, and the service must set a positive example for the community.
Students at the middle school collected pennies and used the money to provide care packages to Idaho’s 1016th Quartermaster Company who is serving in Iraq. Along with the Spirit of Idaho Award presentation, the senator also presented students with the official Congressional Record of his acknowledgement in the United States Senate, of the schools efforts on behalf of our troops. The record says in part, “Mr. President, Idahoans have a strong reputation for being staunchly patriotic and supporting our military men and women. I am proud to say that this patriotism has its roots even in our children, as evidenced by the recent penny drive held at Hawthorne Middle School in Pocatello, ID. I commend them on their generosity and commitment to our troops, and present Hawthorne Middle School students, parents, and teachers as models of patriotism, civic duty, and selfless giving.”
Senator Crapo also presented the school an American flag, which had been flown over the nation’s Capitol in Washington, D.C. “I find it very important that our nation’s flags be handled appropriately said the senator. Flags come to us folded like a blanket and we refold them. I’ve had to teach my staff how to properly fold a flag. If you ever need a lesson, I could teach it.” The senator left the school’s auditorium to thunderous applause, but returned seconds later to observe the crowd’s respectful and appreciative standing ovation.
