Pocatello/Chubbuck School District and Pocatello Police Department to hold safety training exercise at Century High School
The Pocatello Police Department and the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District will hold a combined safety training exercise at Century High School. The training will be held the week of August 6, 2007 at 7801 Diamondback Drive. Training will involve members of the Pocatello Police Department and District administrators.
Police Department and District Officials want to make the public aware of this training to minimize the possibility that someone will see parts of the exercise and believe it to be a true incident.
The training will cover two topics: responding to an active shooter at a school and rescuing a wounded person. The first hour will be classroom instruction, followed by hands on instruction on each topic, and scenario based exercises. District administration will be given a description of the response plan and allowed to observe part of the exercises practiced by the police department. Following the training, time is allotted for debriefing the exercise and a question and answer period.
Training scenarios will involve “simunitions” weapons, which are handguns that will only fire paint projectiles. The paint is completely washable and will not cause damage or harm. Since the police will be displaying tactics, which must remain protected, the training will not be open to the public or the media for observation or videotaping. However, Captain Rick Capell and a District spokesperson will be available to do interviews with the media and answer questions about the training. The best opportunity for media interviews will be Thursday, August 9th at 11:00 a.m.
