The Pocatello/Chubbuck School District will present the proposed high school redesign plan for parent and public input. Three sessions will be presented as follows:

Monday, October 1 … Hawthorne Middle School … 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 2 … Franklin Middle School ……. 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 9 … Irving Middle School ………. 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

New State Board of Education graduation requirements will increase math and science credits from 4 each to 6 each, add a senior project, require ACT/SAT or Compass testing by the end of 11th grade, and increase the overall credits required for graduation from 42 to 46.

The high school redesign committee has been developing the District’s high school redesign plan for approximately one year. The committee consists of District teachers and staff, students, business, parents, and members of the general public. Their purpose was to research best practices for middle and high schools, frame the State Board of Education’s revised graduation requirements around current middle and high school best practices, determine how best to meet the new graduation requirements, and make recommendations for implementation. The committee was broken into subcommittees for more thorough review of research, data, four year plans, site visits, senior projects, and alternatives to traditional semester schedules. They are now ready to present their proposal and are asking for input from staff, parents and the public.

The informational sessions will provide an overview of the proposed plan to meet the increased state standards for high school graduation, answer any questions about the proposed plan, receive feedback on the proposed plan and provide forms for private feedback on the plan. Once presentations have been made the committee will compile the feedback, refine the proposal, define costs, begin fiscal planning, define the scope of staffing and then seek board approval for the plan. Full scale implementation is planned for fall 2009. The increased standards will be effective for our current 7th grade class when they graduate from high school in 2013.
