Poky High kicks of Virtues Project to restore trust and unity

One year after the death of fellow student Cassie Jo Stoddard, students at Pocatello High School will launch the “Virtues Project” with a proclamation by Mayor Roger Chase, a carnival, and a virtues/pride t-shirt for all students and staff.

The kick off will be Monday, October 3, 2007 at Pocatello High School. Mayor Chase’s proclamation has been recorded and will be played throughout the school at 11:30 a.m. The carnival will start at 11:35 a.m. and go until 3:00 p.m. After the carnival, students will begin hanging virtues posters throughout the school. The virtues posters were made by students and feature students in them. Next week, the school will begin a “Virtue of the Week” campaign and will have virtues activities going on throughout the year. The students also plan to include parents and the community in the positive project. Students will provide the family virtues resource guide, Raising Kind Kids, by Linda Kavelin-Popov to all Poky High parents and will advertise monthly virtues throughout the community.

At the carnival, students will go through an obstacle course. After completion of the course, they will be given their virtues/pride t-shirt, which will be their pass to participate in other activities. Other activities include sumo, jousting, dunking booth, sports arena and bungee run. Each activity will represent a virtue such as jousting – “stand up for unity”.

This project is headed by students. Three committees were formed to carry the “Virtues Project” forward and they are a kick off committee, an activities committee, and a community/parent committee.

Trust, unity and pride were shattered after the tragic death of Cassie Jo Stoddart. This project is a way to positively regain that trust, unity and pride and to reinforce kindness throughout the school.
