Time

With the beginning of a new year and the tradition of setting resolutions, a discussion of time and how we budget it seems necessary. Thomas Edison stated in the Declaration of Independence “all men are created equal.” Ask any single person out there, who takes dating seriously, whether or not all men or women are created equally and then prepare for an onslaught of raving and a resounding “HELL NO!” (Stand back, they tend to spit a lot when speaking about something they feel strongly about.) While we may not all be physically, emotionally, mentally or any other—-ally the same, we do have one thing given equally to all. It comes in the form of a number. The magical number is 86,400.

If you are alive you are given 86,400 of these everyday. Over the coarse of a year you will use up 31,536,000 of these valuable tidbits. If you haven’t guessed by now you should not be surprised to learn that these are moments of time normally referred to as seconds. And for all of us who get to live another day, we are given a fresh supply at the stroke of midnight to use however we choose. So while we may not be equal in any other sense of the word we do get equal amounts of time. The difference begins in how we use or spend the seconds allotted to us.

There are times when certain seconds seem to last longer than other seconds. Albert Einstein developed a physics concept based on the relativity of time. He described the difference a moment of sitting next to your ideal mate and that same moment spent having your hand on a hot plate. As can be imagined these two moments are worlds apart in duration and meaning however, in truth, they are the same.

Whether you are rich or poor, well or ill, male or female, happy or sad or any other opposites you have 86,400 seconds everyday to spend doing what you will. Maybe how we spend our seconds dictates who and where we are in life. With that in mind we should carefully contemplate what resolutions we establish and be willing to spend the seconds needed to fulfill our lofty goals whatever they maybe.
