POCATELLO, ID – Bureau of Land Management (BLM) fire managers conduct a prescribed burn in the Soda Springs area starting May 15, weather conditions permitting.
The “Soda Hills” burn is approximately 200 acres and will be in the Upper Valley drainage in Idaho Ranch Canyon near Soda Springs. The goals of this project are to: 1) reduce the potential for large, high-intensity, high-severity wildland fires that can harm or destroy life, property and resources; 2) improve forest and rangeland health by increasing disturbance to a more natural historic level within the project area; and 3) encourage aspen regeneration.
Desired future conditions include reduced risk of intense and severe wildland fire and an increase in aspen and mountain shrub regeneration. This burn is anticipated to take two weeks to complete. BLM is conducting the burn in cooperation with the Forest Service.
Prescribed fire is used to restore the natural and positive effects of fire in selected areas. The vegetation is ignited under specified conditions that take in consideration weather, smoke dispersion, fuel conditions and the desired outcome of the planned burn. If specified conditions are not met on the planned day of the burn, ignition is postponed.
Smoke will be visible from Soda Springs and the surrounding area. For further prescribed burning information, please contact Joel Gosswiller at (208) 236-7560. For other fire related information visit www.idahofireinfo.blm.gov, click on “fire information”.
