Island Park, ID: The Caribou-Targhee National Forest has terminated the temporary area closure order, put in place last Friday, August 17, 2007 for the Moose Creek area near Big Springs in Island Park.
The area closure was in effect to protect human life and safety from potential grizzly bear-human encounters. On August 16th, a grizzly bear sow with two cubs wandered into at least three campsites looking for food. The bears entered unoccupied tents.
All three bears were captured over the weekend. Caribou-Targhee National Forest employees and members of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team assisted Idaho Department of Fish and Game officials in trapping the animals.
C-T Forest and Idaho Department of Fish and Game Officials remind the public and residents in the area to keep all food and garbage in bear proof containers and not outside where a bear can get into the potential food source. Due to the current drought, bears are looking for any type of food source either on the forest, in a campground or at a residence.
The Caribou-Targhee National Forest will be expanding its existing food storage order to focus on reducing adverse conflicts between humans and grizzly bears. The order will be implemented on March 1, 2008 and will be in effect until December 1 (more) on an annual basis. The order will also benefit other wildlife species such as black bears. The order will require that unattended food, refuse, and attractants be stored in hard-sided vehicles or bear-resistant containers (or hung above the ground out of the reach of bears).
