EIIFC is managing four fires as Wildland Fire Use (WFU) Fires. All four are still active even though growth has been minimal an all but the Bear WFU fire.
MEDIA NOTE: Some of you have been using the term “Let Burn” or “Let It Burn” in regards to Wildland Fire Use fires. Using this term could lead the public to believe that agencies are not doing anything in regards to these fires.
Wildland Fire Use is defined as the management of a lightning-cause wildfire, burning in a pre-approved geographic area, to play its natural role in the environment. The actual management of wildland fire use is a complex process, requiring strict planning and documentation procedures, equal to those used on wildfires.
As you can see from the fire information below, there are a number of fire resources assigned to the fire. Air resources including a helicopter are also involved on a daily basis. Even the three smaller fires are being managed and monitored on a daily basis.
• Bear WFU – 3,050 acres at 8 p.m. 8/28/07. Fire activity has increased significantly on the south flank near the South Fork of Bear Creek Trailhead. Minimal fire activity within the Deadman Creek drainage with smoldering, creeping and single tree torching. Possibility exists for fire activity to increase with movement up canyon in the Deadman drainage. 27 firefighters and aerial reconnaissance are managing this incident.
The location is 15 ½ miles south and little west of Swan Valley. An area closure is in effect around the fire and shall remain in effect until further notice. CLOSED National Forest System Trails or portions thereof include: FS Trails #029, #040, #041, #042, #048, #049, #130, #144, #146, #147, #148 and #157. No change in the closure order is expected prior to 15 September 2007 depending on fire and weather conditions.
• Taylor WFU – Currently 3 acres, this lightning-caused fire is located on the southwest side of Taylor Mountain, 7 miles southeast of Victor, Idaho.
• Spring Run WFU – The fire is located 8 miles east and south of Palisades Reservoir and is .25 acres.
• Sherman Peak WFU – The fire is located 12 miles south of Soda Springs, a smoldering log with little potential to spread. The fire is .25 acres.
