IDAHO FALLS, ID. Stage I Fire Restrictions on open fires and smoking on federal and state lands in Southeast Idaho took effect 1201 AM, Thursday, July 19, 2007 1201. According to East Idaho Interagency Fire Center officials, “Dry conditions and extreme fire behavior were the reasons to put these restrictions into effect. We are seeing fire behavior that is dangerous to the public and to fire fighting personnel assigned to battle these fires.” “Temperatures may have gone down but it is still hot and dry”, stated Lynn Ballard, Fire Information Officer for the East Idaho Interagency Fire Center. “Fire restrictions will be in place through the Labor Day weekend and beyond depending on conditions that directly affects fire behavior.”
Stage I Fire Restrictions allow:
1. Campfires ONLY to be built in developed recreation sites or sites authorized by public land agencies.
2. Smoking ONLY inside a vehicle, building or within a developed recreation site or an area clear of vegetation three feet in diameter.3. Stoves using liquid petroleum or LPG fuels.
Stage I Fire Restrictions do not apply within city limits or to activities that land-managing agencies have specifically given permits for.
Violation of the prohibited acts is punishable by a fine of not more than $5000 and/or imprisonment for not more than six months. Persons determined responsible for starting wildfires can be held liable for suppression costs as well as property damage and criminal charges.
