EIIFC Fires – September 3rd Evening Update

Posted on: September 04, 2007

EASTERN IDAHOThe National Weather Service in Pocatello has issued a Fire Weather Watch, which is in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday evening:
A storm system currently over the Pacific Ocean will move towards Idaho in the next 24 hours. Ahead of the system a cold front will cross through the watch area, creating gusty and shifting winds, causing concerns for existing or new fires. Also, the chance of thunderstorms will increase through the day. At first, storms potentially could be drier in nature, producing frequent lightning and gusty winds. Later in the day, storms are expected to become more precipitous and produce wetting rains. Even with wetter storms, frequent lightning could spark new fires across the area.

A fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur. Listen for later forecasts and possible Red Flag warnings.

EIIFC is managing one new fire and diligently working yesterday’s lightning fire:

  • Peaches Fire – 15 miles west of Scout Mountain, on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation, this 2-acre fire was contained at 2:45 this afternoon. One engine continues to work toward controlling this fire.
  • Sweetwater Fire – 16 miles southeast of Montpelier, close to the north end of Bear Lake, this lightning fire started yesterday and grew thousands of acres today. Currently at 3,200 acres, 2 dozers, 3 hand crews, 12 engines, 1 water tender and several aircraft, including one air attack plane, one lead plane, one heavy air tanker and 9 SEAT’s are fighting this fire.

EIIFC is managing six fires as Wildland Fire Use (WFU) fires. All six WFU’s are still active but increased humidity and cloud cover continues to keep fire growth to a minimum:

  • Hominy Fire – This 75-acre fire was reported on August 29 and is located 26-miles east of Ashton, Idaho and approximately 20-miles northeast of Tetonia, Idaho. This fire is burning in heavy timber in the Jedediah Smith Wilderness, Teton County, Wyoming. An emergency area/road/trail closure is in effect and will remain in effect until further notice. These closures are necessary to provide protection to forest visitors from the current fire safety hazards associated with the Hominy Fire. CLOSED National Forest System Trails or portions thereof in the Jedediah Smith Wilderness area include: FS Trail # 014 Hominy Peak Trail, # 059 Hidden Lake Trail (trail is open from Coyote Meadows to Hidden Lake), # 009 Conant Basin Trail, # 025 (at junction of #025 and #009 east to Carrot Knoll). National Forest System Roads located on Ashton/Island Park Ranger District and affected by this closure include: FS Road # 034 (heading southeast off of FS Road #264 – Jackass Loop Road).
  • Bear WFU – TMinimal fire activity keeps this fire at 3,200 acres. A burn out was conducted on the southwest edge of the fire adding approximately 150-acres to the total. 27 firefighters and aerial reconnaissance are managing this incident. The location is 15 ½ miles south and little west of Swan Valley. An area closure is in effect around the fire and shall remain in effect until further notice. CLOSED National Forest System Trails or portions thereof include: FS Trails #029, #040, #041, #042, #048, #049, #130, #144, #146, #147, #148 and #157.
No change in either closure order is expected prior to 15 September 2007, depending on fire and weather conditions.
  • Taylor WFU – Currently 3 acres, this lightning-caused fire is located on the southwest side of Taylor Mountain, 7 miles southeast of Victor, Idaho.
  • Spring Run WFU – The fire is located 8 miles east and south of Palisades Reservoir and is .25 acres.
  • Sherman Peak WFU – The fire is located 12 miles south of Soda Springs, a smoldering log with little potential to spread. The fire is .25 acres.
  • Ellie WFU – This single tree lightning fire is located near Upper Palisades Creek.

For more information on these fires, to get updates on new fires, for fire restriction information or a list of approved developed recreation sites under the Stage I Fire Restriction Order, please visit our website at www.idahofireinfo.blm.gov/east, and click on “fire information” or “fire restrictions.” A fire information line has also been established, where a brief summary of the daily fire activity can be heard by calling the East Idaho Interagency Fire Center hotline at (208) 557-5850.
