Idaho Falls, Idaho: The Westside Ranger District of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest will be conducting a 300-acre prescribed fire, six miles south of Pocatello, Idaho in the Gibson Jack drainage. Burning is expected to occur Friday, September 20th 2007.
The Wild Horse Mountain Burn is part of the Portneuf West Bench Project. The purpose of the burn is to reduce hazardous fuel loading in the Pocatello wildland urban interface (WUI). This part of the forest is dominated be the mountain shrub community. The objectives of this burn is to create a mosaic pattern across the unit by reducing the fuels on approximately one-half to two-thirds of the burn area The burn area will also connect to the old City Creek Fire on the northeast side and the Research Natural Area to the south.
Ignition will proceed when proper weather and fire behavior conditions are met. During implementation, smoke may be noticeable. For further information or questions regarding prescribed burning within the Westside Ranger District, please call 208-236-7500.
