Firefighters and Students Determine Best Treatment
IDAHO FALLS, ID: The Idaho Falls District of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will be lighting a prescribed burn today, September 28th, as part of a cooperative effort with Utah State University (USU).
Approximately thirty miles northwest of Idaho Falls, a 107-acre area will be exposed to extreme heat. This fire, along with three other methods of treatment being applied to that vegetation, will help determine optimum management for sagebrush sustainability in both sagebrush-steppe and sagebrush semi-desert environments.
Over the next several years, USU students will monitor all four units: a control area where nothing is being done to the vegetation, an area treated with herbicide, an area that will be mowed and the area being lit today.
Anyone who would like more information concerning the efforts of this joint project may contact Kelly Hoffer, (208) 709-2416 or Jason Wright, (208) 524-2367. You can also find information regarding this project and other wildland-related fires by visiting the East Idaho Interagency Fire Center (EIIFC) website listed below.
