IDAHO FALLS – Even though Idaho Falls is over 500 miles away from the area in question, the local Idaho Falls office of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) is scoping special turkey season rules for the Panhandle Region. Winter flocks of wild turkey in Panhandle Units 1, 2, 3, and 5 have increased beyond property owners’ levels of tolerance. Since 2004, 730 turkeys have been trapped and moved from the Panhandle Region during the winter to address depredation problems. Much to the satisfaction of local hunters, over the years many of these birds landed in the Upper Snake Region.
Even with all the various relocation efforts, there has not been a noticeable reduction in hunting opportunity or a reduction in the following year’s depredation complaints in the Panhandle. The proposed changes include increasing the bag limit to five turkeys and extending the fall hunting season to December 15 in Units 1, 2, 3, and 5.
Because sportsmen from the Idaho Falls area have shown a growing interest in turkey hunting, IDFG is interested in local sportsmens’ opinions. Questionnaires are available at all Idaho Department of Fish and Game Regional Offices. Interested hunters can stop by a regional office and complete a questionnaire until May 8, 2007. Public input will be summarized and presented to the Idaho Fish and Game Commission at their May meeting.
The public is encouraged to visit in person to make comments about potential proposals, but those Individuals with disabilities or who have difficulty traveling can comment by contacting Gregg Losinski at the Idaho Department of Fish & Game at 525-7290 or through the Idaho Relay Service at 1-800-377-3529 (TDD). Comments can also be sent via E-mail to glosinski@idfg.idaho.gov. Deadline for comments is 5:00 P.M. on May 8, 2007.
