The far southeastern corner of Idaho is a warm water anglers dream. With small bodies of water dotted across this region, anglers have the opportunity to fish for a wide variety of species like bass, crappies, bluegill, perch, tiger musky and rainbows. All of these reservoirs are located a few minutes from Preston. Glendale Reservoir is loaded with bass in the 13 – 17 inch range and is considered by Idaho Fish and Game (208)-232-4703 as the best bass fishery in the region. With strict regulations, look for this fishery to be top notch as water has held over for the past few years. Check your Idaho regulations for limits and restrictions. Over 6,000 catchable rainbows have been stocked and will provide anglers a good opportunity to go home with a limit. Although trolling pop gear and spinners work well, drifting power bait and crawlers are also a good choice. You will find that most hold over fish are fat and chunky like footballs. Bass can be caught fishing points and backwater bays. Early morning hours are your best bet but late evenings also produce fish. Top water baits like floating rapalas and jitterbugs work very well fished near structure and shallow water adjacent to deeper water. Foster, a stones throw from Glendale is also a good bet for trout fishermen. A few thousand have been stocked during the past couple of months for the opener. This is a no boat reservoir limiting this to bank fishing only and float tubing. Again, traditional baits like worms, marshmallows and power bait is your best bet and currently anglers are doing well. Lamont and Johnson reservoirs east of Preston receive light fishing pressure but have the potential for large bass, bluegills with Lamont producing a tiger musky or two. Lamont is primarily for boaters as most of the surrounding land is private. Concentrate on the northern end in the shallows and brush for bass and tiger musky but bluegills are also in good supply in this area. Trout anglers should concentrate near the dam and in the middle fishing the deeper water using standard tackle. Although quite small, Johnson reservoir holds trout, bass and bluegills but recent droughts have hurt this fishery. Trout is the mainstay and should provide good fishing with recent stockings by Fish and Game. For more information and current reports contact Sportsman’s Warehouse in Pocatello at (208)-238-7500.
