FAIRFIELD – Looking for a good spot to escape the rat race of the daily grind and a hot spot for yellow perch – try fishing Mormon Reservoir.
A recent Idaho Fish and Game survey showed high numbers of yellow perch ranging in size from four inches up to 14 inches.
“Catch rates should be high for anglers, but you may have to work your way through lots of small fish to get to the larger ones,” said Erin Gutknecht, Fisheries Technician. “Rainbow trout were present but numbers are low – possibly due to poor over- winter water conditions.”
Mormon Reservoir is under general fishing regulations so a person can keep six rainbow trout. There is no limit on the number of perch anglers can catch and keep.
“Most people fish for yellow perch by jigging a worm just off the bottom of the reservoir,” said Gutknecht. “If you are planning to bank fish, try along the North West shore around the boat ramp due to the easy access.
Fishing is best earlier in the year due to weed problems in the reservoir which can make boat use and fishing difficult. If using a boat, be sure to check the boat and trailer for weeds before leaving the area to help prevent the spread of nuisance aquatic vegetation.
