S.E. IDAHO RESERVOIRS

The fishing opportunities in this neck of the woods are endless. From tiger muskies in Lamont to Smallmouth bass in Alexander with a mix of channel cats, it looks like anglers do have a choice to go after their favorite species. One problem exists, water and the lack of it.

According to Idaho Fish and Game biologist Dave Teucher 208-232-4703 most of the reservoirs are on the ragged edge and a few have been lost like Foster and Winder. “It’s been tough so far with lack of any precipitation, it takes it toll on fisheries,” he says.

But a few bright spots do exist. Alexander reservoir has been putting out good numbers of quality channel cats and some smallmouth bass. “We have done our initial check and so far reports have been good,” says Teucher. Just remember, most cut baits will work, the smellier the better.

Weston is also fairing very well. Bass and perch are growing to larger proportions as are the trout. In my last article on Weston I wrote that float tubes are permissible NOT RAFTS! Apparently there was some confusion on this subject. Tubes only anglers, no boats allowed.

Lamont was stocked with tiger muskies last year and most are small in the 15 – 20 inch range. But, Teucher says one in there is 30 plus inches. “Like Condie reservoir near Grace, Lamont reservoir has some good sized tiger’s in it,” he says.

He also says this is probably the last year tiger’s will be stocked in any of these reservoirs due to some public outcry. That’s a shame; apparently anglers in Idaho have never hooked into a 30 inch fish ripping up gear and tail walking towards the sky. Anglers pay high prices to go to Canada for this kind of action. If you plan to fish for tiger’s remember to bring bass plugs and steel leaders or don’t even waste your time, you’ll never land one.

Chesterfield near Bancroft is cranking out trout up to 23 inches long from the 2005 stocking. “I just got off the phone with an angler and he did manage to hook into some of these larger fish. As the weather cools, the fishing here will get hotter,” exclaims Teucher.
