Hunters Fear Media Portrayal is Often Inaccurate

Posted on: April 14, 2008

A substantial majority of U.S. hunters feel that portrayal of hunters in movies and on television shows is biased and inaccurate, according to a recent survey. In a March 2008 poll of 1,906 hunters by HunterSurvey.com, hunters were asked: “Are hunters accurately portrayed in television and movies?”

Of the hunters surveyed, more than half (51%) felt that hunters are rarely portrayed accurately in the movies and on television programs. Another 43% felt that hunters are only “sometimes” portrayed accurately. A further 5% felt that hunter portrayals are “never” accurate, while a scant 0.63% felt that hunters are “always” portrayed accurately.

Looked at another way, a clear majority (56%) of surveyed hunters feel that hunter portrayals on television and in movies are rarely or never accurate. Of those surveyed, 824 (or 43%) felt that hunter portrayals are “sometimes” accurate.

Based on the survey results, television producers and filmmakers have a long way to go to convince hunters that they are being portrayed accurately on film.
