My biggest concern after receiving the Cocoons Eyewear was that it may be too heavy to be comfortable. Cocoons met the challenge – the combination of lightweight yet durable attractive materials and the adjustable Flex2Fit temples give a comfortable fit that doesn’t add weight to your prescription glasses.
Available in several sizes the Live Eyewear web site uses a measuring system that allows you to custom fit your glasses to the correct Cocoon fit. The lenses come in four different colors, gray, amber, cooper, and yellow. Warranted to be free from manufacturer’s defects for one year, even with normal dropping and the contact with the prescription glasses, the cocoons showed no scratches or wear after a good 2 months of abuse.
Cocoons come in three different frame colors, black, sand, and tort. They have a 360 degree wrap that protects your eyes by filtering light from all directions. Amber polarized Polaré lenses enhance visual perception by sharpening shadows and improving depth perception under low light conditions. Yellow polarized Polaré lenses enhance light levels and improve color contrast in low light conditions. Copper polarized Polaré lenses heighten visual acuity and enhance color to improve contrast while providing a truer color definition than amber. Gray polarized Polaré lenses provide true color definition in bright light conditions while reducing harsh glare and improving visual perception.
I tried the Slim Line Tort with Amber lenses. Within the first 30 minutes I felt my eyes relax. The color seemed to actually become enhanced and the definition of objects was comparable to much more expensive glasses. I found that unlike other RX wrap glasses the Cocoons stayed in place and the adjustable temples prevented the normal “hot spots” behind my ears. Priced at $39.99 per pair, I could see myself purchasing different styles
for applications like fishing or hunting. Needing protection from studio lighting that I am exposed to regularly, the glasses worked well and prevented the fatigue and headaches I had been experiencing after shooting. The glasses didn’t stop there though, I found them incredibly useful outdoors and going from indoors to out I didn’t experience that momentary blindness that such a drastic change in lighting often causes.
The one thing I did find is the fit of your glasses is extremely important on how well the Cocoons wear. One set of my glasses are just over the 5 ¼” width recommended for the Slim Line (medium) in this case the Wide Line would have been a better fit. Make sure before you order that you make the measurements for your glasses to ensure the proper fit. The other issue is that they truly enclose your glasses so any moisture will cause the
glasses to fog . . . something all prescription glasses wearers already deal with. Just remove the moisture and the glasses clear instantly.
Our Camera and Video Director, Mike Ponkow, wears his Cocoons constantly. He has the Black Slim Line with Gray lenses and says the color is phenomenal. Instead of dulling the color, the hues are actually enhanced. They fit his glasses like a glove and the wrap around style gives wind protection which in the Intermountain West can be as important as filtering the light. The glasses are designed so that he retains excellent peripheral sight. Like me, Mike found that with minor adjustment, the glasses fit snuggly without causing any discomfort behind the ears. The polarization of the lenses is perfect with fantastic glare reduction. He found the glasses extremely relaxing to wear and does not get the eye fatigue associated with outdoor camera work. Overall he found these glasses to be comparable to glasses he’s tried at 2 to 3 times the cost. These are great glasses at a great price. Mike sends a big thank you to Live Eyewear for such a great design.
