Outdoor Adventures Unique at Any Time of Year

Posted on: December 06, 2006

Idaho State University Outdoor Adventure Center offers a variety of opportunities for students and residents alike. The Adventure Center which also houses CW Hogg focuses on introducing individuals to outdoor recreation. In addition to classes the Center offers affordable rentals of a great variety of equipment. Individuals looking to try a sport for the first time have a great opportunity to try the activity before making a large investment.

CW Hogg works with the adventure center to make the outdoors available to disabled persons. The Hogg program also needs volunteers. With winter comes a large number of opportunities – and volunteers do not need to be experts in skiing or snow shoeing to participate.

The Portneuf Range Yurt System offers a unique chance to experience our area. The system consists of a series of six winter huts located in southeast Idaho. Yurts offer shelter, a place to sleep and eat comfortably. They act as a great home base to allow visitors to explore an area in depth. Users should realize that winter travel and the use of the yurts are dangerous. Extreme weather, vandalism, and other snow falls can collapse part or all of the yurt, and freezing and thawing create havoc with the Coleman stoves. Although the yurts have wood in them, visitors could need to gather and split additional wood. The bottom line is to speak with the Adventure Center to make sure you are prepared for potential problems. Cost to use yurts is $27.00 for Pocatello Residents and ISU Students, $37.00 for Idaho Residents, and $47.00 for Non-Idaho Residents.

Rentals from the Adventure Center include Water Equipment, Snow Equipment, Rowing Packages, Paddle Packages, Kayak, Canoe, Cataraft Packages, and Camping Equipment.

Make a resolution, get out and visit the Outdoor Adventure Center and really enjoy the area we live in.
