IDAHO FALLS -After meeting with the public both regionally and statewide, IDFG wildlife biologists are now ready to present to the public proposed big game regulation changes for the upcoming season. Regionally, biologists held scoping meetings at the end of January in Idaho Falls, Rexburg, and Arco. Now they are ready to return to those towns and present proposed regulation changes developed in response to what the public had to say.
According to Regional Wildlife Manager Daryl Meints, “While some sportsmen talked to us about deer and elk numbers, the big discussions at our scoping meetings centered around the new muzzleloader rules created by the Commission. I think our proposals show how we hope to provide better hunting opportunity for those who continue to hunt with a muzzleloader.”
According to Meints, “What we’ve tried to do is increase muzzleloader opportunity in places like Units 64 & 65 for both deer and elk and Units 62, 66, 67 and 69 for elk.” The new muzzleloader regulations are also allowing IDFG to propose increasing opportunity to hunt antelope in Unit 63 using a muzzleloader. Additionally, according to Meints, “We are also proposing to provide the opportunity for a quality White-tailed Deer hunting experience in Unit 63A.”
As part of the Department’s elk management plan, each management unit has specific population objectives. When a population is either over objective or under objective wildlife biologists come up with strategies to bring numbers back in line. Currently, biologists have been working on managing elk numbers in Units 66 and 69 which are part of the Tex Creek Zone and Unit 51 of the Lemhi Zone. Proposed regulation changes regarding these areas will also be discussed at these meetings.
