The San Jose Mercury News reports today that baby boomers are leaving California in droves, and many of them are heading to Idaho.
Idaho’s public policy future will be shaped in part by where these boomers fit on the political spectrum. Since economic factors seem to the primary driving force, they are liable to represent a diversity of political viewpoints. Some will skew Idaho to the left, others, perhaps drawn to Idaho by its family-friendly values and atmosphere, will pull the Gem State to the right.
I received a call in the early days of the IVA from a man who wanted to become a part of our network. He told me he had just recently moved here. I asked him where he had moved from. “California,” he replied. Oh, I said, what prompted you to move to Idaho? “California,” he replied.
He had moved his family because he believed it to be a better place to raise his children, and was eager to join our alliance in order to preserve the values that made the Gem State a destination point for his family. The IVA will continue to pursue its mission of making Idaho the friendliest place in the world to raise a family, for out-of-staters as well as in-staters.
