    Illegal Immigration an Idaho Problem

    Posted on: May 09, 2008

Because the federal government has failed to secure our southern border, a 10-year-old girl in St. Anthony was raped and impregnated last year by 37 year-old man whom the Associated Press delicately says “did not have legal documentation to live in the United States.” She gave birth to the child two weeks ago. At 10 years of age !!

A secure border is about a lot of things, but certainly one primary component is and ought to be protecting Americans from criminal elements who have no legal right to be here in the first place. We have enough crime to deal with from our own citizens without importing it from other countries.

And the failure of immigrants to adequately assimilate to American culture is on display in Twin Falls, where a Hispanic student at Minico High School brought a Mexican flag to school on Cinco de Mayo and provocatively waved it around in the school gym.

A teacher confronted the student and confiscated the flag, apparently concerned about the disruptive potential of the student’s actions, and the story is already receiving national attention. We’ll be looking for more details to emerge in coming days to get a fuller picture of what transpired. (The old media naturally focuses on the teacher depositing the confiscated flag in a trash can until the student could retrieve it at the end of the day.)

The student – who conducted his interviews with the media in Spanish due to his limited English proficiency – has become a hero on the left, and naturally it is the teacher rather than the disruptive student who may be sued in court by the ever-helpful ACLU.

Remember that Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday and has nothing whatsoever to do with the United States. It celebrates the victory of Mexico over the invading forces of Napoleon III in 1862 while the U.S. was occupied with the Civil War.

Perhaps students at our public high schools should be encouraged to celebrate American holidays at school, and the holidays of their countries of origin at home.
